What is Monks of the LEAR?

Monks of the LEAR gives you 23 new missions for the ASF: Tarkin add-on.You have to have ASF: Tarkin installed to play these missions.

The story driven missions follows the first phase of GA Thrawns plan of splitting the rebel factions and tricking them into fighting each other.

Differences from ASF: Tarkin

The main difference from ASF: Tarkin is the heavy use of the TIE Devastator and a E-Wing prototype, both are fast and have 8 lasers but no warhead capacity. The use of these fighters is inspired by the airwar against the Japanese in WW2. In the beginning the TIE Devastator is totally superior (like the Zero was), then rapid Rebel development comes up with the E-Wing (corsair) and the New Republic can take their revenge on the LEAR and their friends. (The E-Wing is only equal to the TIE Devastator, not superior like the new American planes were towards the Zero).

While ASF: Tarkin concentrated its battles around the destruction of ships with the help of larger craft, Monks of the LEAR concentrates around fighter wars involving the capture or destruction of bases.

The missions are also cut to the bone, you get the mission story but goals and flyable ships are not present in the mission description. You find out what ships you can chose from when you start the mission and you can press the 'G' key when flying to see what the goal is. I'm just making these missions to get new and better battles, so I have removed everything I don't personally use.

I played through some of the missions from the original X-Wing some days ago and my God are they boring! Did I really like that crap?

Seeds Of Chaos

Message from: Grand Admiral Thrawn

Message to: Imperial Ruling Circle

The Rebels have taken Corcuscant and established their new Republic, it is time to shatter their alliance and stir up unrest and violence amongst the different factions. But before this can be done the Calamari must be weakened, their fleet of Battle Cruisers holds the other forces in check.

A secret Imperial organization known as the LEAR have with the Emperors and later My help built up a considerable force of ships, they have a plan that could keep the Calamari occupied for a long time and more importantly it could lead to the destruction or at least withdrawal of most of their BattleCruisers.

The plan is to provoke a war between the Calamari and their neighbors, the Ninx and S'meg are already hostile towards the Calamari but the Nogo have been their allied sins the S'meg war 100 years ago.

The Ninx are currently under Calamari / New Republic blockade due to their loyalty towards the Imperial Forces, they only have few battle ready ships but a lot of resources. I have decided that this planet is the last to be involved in the fighting, its better to wait till the Calamari forces withdraws to protect their own space before breaking the blockade and size the planets stockpiled resources.

The S'meg are eager to retake the space lost during the old war, we plan to provoke a Calamari / Nogo attack against one of the most influential S'meg clans. The S'meg will respond by sending a small force into Nogo space, where a Calamari BattleCruiser unit will force it to retreat, this is nearly a tradition, it happens several times a year. But this time it will be different, as soon as the S'meg start their retreat our forces will attack and destroy the entire BattleCruiser unit using a new secret TIE fighter. The LEAR will pretend to be searching for a new home and will offer the S'meg upgraded Imperial weapons in exchange of making the LEAR an official independent S'meg clan. After 100 years of retreats the S'meg will attack instantly now that they have the edge over their enemies. The S'megs are members of the rebellion so the New Republic fleet can't help the Calamari forces directly, this is a great advantage for us.

The Nogo will not attack the Calamari for any reason, but they have a weak spot, they are 100% loyal to their King. We can't get to the King himself but the Crownprins is currently at a New Republic facility overseeing Nogo pilots training on their newly acquired B-Wings (The S'meg have loudly protested this sale). The LEAR will kidnap the Prince and as a bonus they will destroy this facility and all the B-Wings before the Nogo pilots knows how to handle them.Using Sith mind control techniques they will brainwash the Prince to follow their orders. Now they 'only' have to kill the King, which is easier than getting to him for a long enough period to turn him into a puppet.

The S'meg and LEAR will alone be able to threaten the Calamari enough for them to whitdraw most of their BattleCruisers from the New Republic fleet. If the Nogo and Ninx are successfully added to the S'meg / LEAR forces the Calamari could face a total defeat, but we doubt that the New Republic will allow it to go that far.

The LEAR will push this war until it gets to a point of no return, then they will simply slip away and join up with our main unofficial force for the next phase of this operation.

We expect to lose two LEAR Dreadnoughts and a considerable amount of new TIEs on this mission, but the Rebellion will lose 20-25 capital ships, 10-15 bases and hundreds of fighters. The hostilities could last for years, forcing the Calamari to keep the bulk of their ships at home. But even more important is the effect of having the Calamari, the most powerful Rebel faction, attacking other members of the New Republic.

Stay loyal to the Emperor’s Ruling Circle and soon we can re-establish law and order across the galaxy.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

The LEAR: History

New Republic Library File of Potential dangers:

The Monks of the LEAR was formed by Commander Visoni Orgi after he witnessed the carnage on Tropica, 100 million men lay dead and the once so beautiful planet was darkened by the ashes of its burning continents. Among the mountainsized stacks of dead soldiers he swore that no such war would ever be fought on his planet, or any planet in the then Naboo Council. In the next years he traveled the galaxy in a old Colony ship and gathered the first disciples of retired military and scientific geniuses, together they formed the LEAR.

The LEARs sole task is to make sure no large scale planetside war is ever fought inside what is now known as the Imperial Core. To achieve this they spend all their time and money on developing ships and tactics that surpasses anything else in the Galaxy, thereby making sure that no hostile force can brake through the planets defenses.

The LEAR helped senator Palpatin defeat the Jedi sins the Jedi wanted to spread technology equally among the Republic members. The Imperial core would then lose their military edge and thereby become vulnerable.

The LEAR have been involved in nearly all Imperial military development, they are also rumored to be directly involved in the training of elite Imperial forces. The number of LEAR monks and the forces under their control is unknown, but they have swelled considerably under the rule of Palpatin. It is rumored that the LEAR have several squadrons of fanatic Imperial pilots under their command, squadron names are believed to be Zeusion and Odin. The LEAR is usually seen using old but heavily modified Dreadnoughts used as mobile research and training facilities.

After the battle of Endor the LEAR have more or less disappeared. Only a single Dreadnought have been spotted, it participated in the defense of the Motti base, but managed to escape the Rebel forces. Rumors of a new TIE fighter that single-handedly destroyed a squadron of X-Wings and thereby allowed the Dreadnought to escape is believed to be highly exaggerated.

The LEAR have probably escaped into Imperial controlled territory.

Pilots are advised to stay away from odd looking Dreadnoughts until they can be identified.

LEAR fighters are either flown by LEAR Combat Instructors or Imperial Aces, in either case DO NOT engage in one to one dogfights.

Mission list

(The number beforer the mission name is the ID number of the mission in the mission directory. The file leari01.tie is the file for 'Lear destroys B-Wing Academy' etc..I kept them in this file so you could easier edit the missions to your own taste and skill level.)

Text between >> and << are not present in the game itself, they are purely 'story continuity help', Lukas arts would probably have made them as video cuts, but I really don't have the time to do that.

01 LEAR destroys B-Wing Academy

LEAR attacks a Rebel B-Wing academy to destroy the B-Wings and their pilots before they are battle ready, as a bonus they will also try to capture the visiting Nogo Crown Prince and use him to provoke a war between the Calamari - Nogo alliance and the S'meg Union of Free Clans.

02 Calling Interplanetary Rescue

The Calamari receive information indicating that the Nogo Prince have been sold to a S'meg pirate Clan. A joint Calamari - Nogo rescue force is sent to free the Prince.

03 Show of Force

The S'meg UFC fleet send a Strikecruiser into Nogo space to 'protest' the attack on a peaceful Clan, but as always it is meet by a Calamari Cruiser Group. Outguned (again) the S'meg starts their withdrawal after some aggressive posing, that's when the LEAR enters the scene.

04 S'meg Revenge strike

Armed with new Imperial weapons and supported by LEAR TIE Devastators the S'meg UFC goes to war to avenge 'A Century of Oppression'. First target is Mon Gulag the main Calamari base in old S'meg space, destroying this base will cut the supply line to all other bases in the area.

05 Interdicted

To spread the Calamari - Nogo forces the INT Mythos pulls an Calamari convoy out of hyperspace on the opposite side of the sector.

>> The Calamari presures the New Republic to put the unfinished E-Wing into production to counter the TIE Devastators ravaging the border of their space. The cost of each E-Wing will be astronomical and their longlivity questionable due to the unfinished and buged technology. To shorten the transportation distance the Nogo starship factories will build many of the ships <<

06 E-Wing prototypes first brawl

The New Republic want to test out the E-Wing prototypes battle power before they are sent against the TIE Devastators. The plan is to trap a S'meg pirate clan. Three old transports and a outdated Blocaderunner is sent out as bait.

07 Battle of M-17

Three S'meg strikecruisers attack Nogo colony base in system M-17. The M-17 base have been heavily reinforced by cannibalizing an old planetside fortress. The S'meg might have over rated their own strength.

08 The Dogfight at Fury IV

The S'meg strikecruisers and pirate ships have captured or destroyed most of the Nogo and Calamari outposts in their borderzone, the LEARs TIE Devastators have crushed all signs of resistance. In a last attempt to save face before the new E-Wing arrives Calamari generals launches a large fighter attack against the LEAR protected S'meg Fleet bombarding Nogo colony Fury IV.

09 LEAR Attacks E-Wing Deployment

Finaly the E-Wings are good enough for deployment. The Calamari gets the first patch to protect themself against the TIE Devastator. Unfortunatly the S'meg pirat clans have many spies in important places so the LEAR are abble to arange a nice welcome party.

10 Death of LEAR DRE Tiberius

The DRE Tiberius suplies S'meg pirat clans with improved TIE's. It is chosen as the first target of the E-Wing protected counter attack.

11 Calamari and Nogo attacks S'meg base

The Calamari and Nogo's attack a S'meg base to stop the strikcruiser attacks launched from it

12 E vs D

The Calamari want's to scare the LEAR into abandoning the S'meg clans so they send half the available E-Wings towards the S'meg base belived to have the largest quantity of TIE devastators. The mission is simple, destroy as many Devastators as possible.

>> The relative succes of the still flawed E-Wing have leveled the playingfield, the Calamari - Nogo Generals belives that the New Republic can easily outproduce the LEAR so victory is asured. In this new climat the Nogo's restarts the search for their Crownprince.<<

13 Death of a King

Under heavy protection the Nogo King travels to the Front to boost the moral and question captured S'meg soldiers about the LEAR and the kidnapping of the Crownprince. This is the moment the LEAR have been waiting for, escorted by Devastators their new TIE bomber can penetrate any defense screen and destroy its target. The King of Nogo is as good as dead.

14 The Crown of Nogo

The LEAR DRE Kaligami appears over Nogo prime, its commander is the missing Crown Prince who now demandes the Crown of Nogo. A General calls him a brainwashed traitor and sends his forces against the Kaligami, the battle for Nogo is on.

15 Broken Alliance - New Alliance

The First decree of the new King is to brake the Century old Calamari - Nogo alliance, with the LEAR and S'meg on their side they have no further use for the Calamari, together they form The Alliance of Free Planets. The Calamari imidiatly send a force to confiskate or destroy the Nogo built E-Wings.

>> Coruscant is bristling with rumours of planets beeing wisited by the LEAR, it's only a matter of time before new systems joins the AFP in excange of millitary technology. A large Republic Fleet leaves Coruscant to stop the LEAR before they spread the AFP beyond the Calamari sector. <<

16 The Ninx joins the Alliance of Free Planets

The Imperial Frendly Ninx system curently under Calamari administration declears themself members of AFP. Minuts later a large force of AFP fighters attacks the Calamari and New Republic ships blockading the Ninx planet.

17 New Republic Fleet attacks LEAR

Two LEAR Dreadnoughts are cornered (In space?) by the New Republic fleet.

18 Battle of Ninx

The New Republic Fleet attacks Ninx prime to stop the AFP from moving all the resources stockpiled there during the Calimari blockade. When the first NRP ships arrive Nogo and S'meg freighters are already leaving the planet. The lack of AFP capital ships lures the NRP Commanders to attack the heavily fortified AFP jumppoint to destroy the escaping freighters.

19 Warning Stardestroyer

A Ninx Stardestroyer commander comes out from his hiding place in deep space to join the counter revolution and take his revenge on the New Republic. He has tracked a NRP Repair Frigate for several days, knowing it would lead him to an easy target, and finally he finds the damaged CAL Mon Nagron.

>> The LEAR immediately approaches the ISD Mordant, the commander is given command over 3 capital ships and the entire LEAR Zeusion squadron. His mission is to hide close to the Dopler supply station deep inside Nogo space and wait for the New Republic to attack it, he is not told why the NRP would be stupid enough to attack a base so deep inside enemy territory but with so much free hardware it wouldn't be smart to argue.

The NRP desperatly wants an undamaged TIE Devastator, it is more robust and much cheaper to build than the E-Wing so when a listening post interseps a coded LEAR message ordering the STR Titanica to move TIE Devastators to the DRE Kaligami for final assambly a NRP strikeforce is rapidly formed to track the Titanica to the TIE Storage. <<

20 A small insident at Dopler

The LEAR STR Titanica is resuplying at the Nogo base at Dopler when the New Republic attacks to capture the base and its resources. The AFP are ordered to fire upon their own storage asteroids to destroy them before the NRP can capture them.

>> The Mordant commander is actually surprised when the NRP attacks Dopler on schedule. Unfortunately they are better armed than expected, the ESC Eguen and it's heavy rocket fitted B-Wings are to dangerous for capital ships, they must be destroyed before he can commit the Mordant to the battle. He also needs more ships to avoid loosing capital ships, so while he waits for reinforcements the Zeusion and Ninx Muurian squadron attack the NRP to destroy the B-Wings. <<

21 Fighters over Dopler

LEAR Fighters suported by a Ninx Muurian wing attack the New Republic forces asambled at Dopler. Their target is a Carrier and its Rocket carrying B-Wings, they must be destroyed before the AFP capital ships can engage the NRF forces.

>> The attack on the B-Wings when there where tastier targets close by confirms AFP Capital ship pressence to the NRP officers, in panic they signal a backup force thereby revealing its position to the Mordant commander <<

22 The Dopler Battle

The New Republics dangerous rocket carrying B-Wings are gone, but the NRP orders the fleet to stay put and wait for reinforcements. The Dopler storages are said to have TIE Devastator parts and they must be found and captured at any cost. The commander on ISD Mordant take a critical decision, with a current victory chance of 65% and the NRP reinforcements closer than his own, he attacks with all available ships.

>> All NRP ships are systematicaly destroyed, but the price is high, the Mordant is heavily damaged and the LEAR order its whitdrawal. The Imajica and the Zeusion squadron joins the Mordant 'to rearm the missileboats from a nearby LEAR suplyship', in reality they and all other LEAR forces set course for the distant Mongosian system to join ISD Kriger and the other LEAR forces stockpileing arms for GA Thrawns second phase in the destruction of the Rebelion. <<

23 Chaos over Dopler

Abandoned by the LEAR, The S'meg, Nogo and Ninx forces are left to face the New Republic Fleet without the protection of the TIE Devastator. The AFP forces at Dopler can only hope that Nogo E- wings can get to Dopler before the NRP reinforcements overrun their defences.
